The Usefulness of Art

I'm looking forward to joining in Concert #2 of The Usefulness of Art series with Adam Simmons Creative Music Ensemble.

The series is inspired by Augustin Rodin's quote: '“I call useful all that gives us happiness… Art shows man his raison d’être.”

Concert #2 is an expansion of Adam's original composition 'The Usefulness of Art' - same as the series title - and goes from Thursday to Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon.

'Do You See What I Hear?' - in honour of Earle Brown and Morton Feldman

Join us & celebrate the 90th birthdays of avant-garde composers Earle Brown and Morton Feldman with a program featuring their graphic scores, new choreography and a new local collaboration in their honour.

Earle Brown and Morton Feldman were composers of the New York School mid-20th century, which had strong ties with the visual arts and challenged mainstream Western approach to composition to regard sounds as themselves - sometimes using graphic notation to articulate ideas and inviting interpreters to join in artistic expression.

The program will start off with Feldman's beautiful solo percussion piece 'King of Denmark', followed by a new collaboration by locals Warren Burt and Carmen Chan. We finish with Brown's 'FOLIO & 4 Systems' interpreted by an eclectic ensemble of musicians from backgrounds including experimental/rock, contemporary and romantic classical, sound art and Persian music, and joined by dancers Tony Yap & Collaborators – echoing the connections between composers and dancers prevalent in the New York School.
